Cystoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the urethra, prostate and bladder under local anesthesia. It is a short procedure (5-15 minutes) and the low-risk procedure.
It is indicated in the following situations:
Persistent or significant blood in the urine (haematuria)
Bladder mass detected on ultrasound or xray
Surveillance for recurrence of bladder cancer
Recurrent bladder infections (UTI)
To assess urethra (urethral stricture) or prostate
To remove ureteric DJ stent.
Complications:
Transient dysuria
Bleeding if a biopsy taken or large BPH with prostatitis is present
