Flexible Cystoscopy

Cystoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the urethra, prostate and bladder under local anesthesia. It is a short procedure (5-15 minutes) and the low-risk procedure.

 

It is indicated in the following situations:

  • Persistent or significant blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • Bladder mass detected on ultrasound or xray
  • Surveillance for recurrence of bladder cancer
  • Recurrent bladder infections (UTI)
  • To assess urethra (urethral stricture) or prostate
  • To remove ureteric DJ stent.

Complications:

  • Transient dysuria
  • Bleeding if a biopsy taken or large BPH with prostatitis is present
  • UTI  ( < 1% )
